I Will Miss You When You Are Gone

by Jacob Driscoll Issue 24 11.15.2010

Life happens like this for everyone. Your greatest loves leave you. Your friends destroy themselves. You meet a pale, dark-haired child who has been alive for thirty-seven billion years and who wants to take your picture as he cuts into your veins, taking your soul and making sense of it all. He has photographs of everyone in the world.

When these things happened to me, I knew the End was near. It came as love died, as lovers died, in chaos and fire and water, hot blood and cold tears.

I look at my clenched fists, studying the lines of tendons in my wrist. “I am going to stop the end from coming. I am going to chase her.”

The knife-child smirks. “You know you’ve been forbidden.”

“Yes. I am not a trained parakeet.”

“The love is all gone! She wants nothingness more than she wants you. They all do! Why chase her? Why force yourself on her? Why force your presence on anyone? Why get out of bed?” The child made of knives is frantic, and confused. “Why wake up? Why go to sleep? How can you have hope, without an ending? How can you know what will happen? How can you know that tomorrow will be okay?”

“I never do,” I confess. “It might not be. It might be even worse.”

“Yes!” he says, relieved. “The love has flown away, and there is no more left. The End has come. How could you possibly hope to chase her? You can’t!”

All his photographs frame the past, but they don’t tell our future. There is something he doesn’t know about.

“I woke up this morning, and I could fly.”

He is astonished. I am laughing, smiling. I spread my arms, and go.
