the silence before liftoff

of the great blue heron is

a hum of flight noise,

each wing flap deliberate

in its weight becoming
|
less in the world
|
falling away and space a thing
|
to behold
|
and listen up for

Marcel Brouwers is the author of the chapbook, The Rose Industrial Complex (Finishing Line Press, 2009). He lives in Knoxville, TN, with his wife, LA Hoffer, and works at the University of Tennessee. A lecturer in the English Department, he is currently the Acting Director of the Writing Center and teaches creative writing, literature, and composition classes. "The Shuttle" is from his first full-length poetry collection, The Old Cities, was released by Sundress Publications in 2012.
