SOUTH SEA EPHEMERAL HYMN
Mosquito netting and silk drawn across her thighs
red-orange the woven water,
the printed petals floating.
The sky has thickened and dawn is coming
while her still Samson on the verandah
measures with cigarettes and melting ice
the time to take before leaving.
The decadent wind; the kindred sea; the universe black-green
and glowing; while all the night between them stays
and they, in prayer, move softly.
The horizon, a thousand fronds derived;
palm upon palm and dawn chastised
in the vesper of their swaying.
