THE CAMEO
In Brindisi, a one-armed jeweler
slips a cameo on my finger
and asks me to lunch in his flat
atop the shop.
He prepares veal and chicken,
his good arm accomplished
at severing eggs.
Pears, apricots in a bowl for later,
a photograph: he and his family at Salerno.
He has always had only one arm.
