MORT THE CAT
the landlord smirked
when he saw me
throwing out the litter box
knowing the cat died --
what he didn’t know
was the swan song --
or how the cat
had waited
until someone came home
to perform it
his yowling grief
briefly eternal
his glazed eye
filled with fear.
